The birth hour sets your hour pillar (each pillar covers a two-hour window), and the birthplace lets us correct clock time to true solar time — which can shift the hour pillar for many locations. If you do not know your birth time, you can still generate a three-pillar chart; the reading will note exactly which parts are less certain.
Usually one of three reasons: true solar time (we apply it, many sites do not), the 23:00 Zi-hour day boundary (schools differ — ours is documented), or solar-term boundaries for the month pillar. Our conventions are published on the chart page and in the guides, so you can verify any difference yourself.

True solar time is the time a sundial at your birthplace would show. It differs from clock time because of your longitude within the time zone (four minutes per degree from the standard meridian) and the equation of time, an annual wobble of roughly −14 to +16 minutes. Together the correction often exceeds half an hour — enough to move a birth into a different traditional hour, and near midnight, a different day. This calculator applies both corrections automatically from your birthplace and notes when a pillar changes.
No — enter the clock time exactly as recorded, and the engine handles the rest. When your birth falls in a DST window, the calculator flags it and applies the correction visibly rather than silently guessing.
That window is the zi hour, and two classical conventions disagree about it: the traditional school starts the new day at 11 pm, while the early/late zi school keeps the day pillar until midnight. The two conventions can produce different day pillars — effectively different charts. This calculator supports both and lets you choose, saving the choice with your chart.
In BaZi the year pillar — and the zodiac sign with it — changes at Lichun, the start-of-spring solar term that falls around February 3–5, not at Chinese New Year. Someone born on February 1 usually still belongs to the previous year's pillar even if the lunar new year has already passed. This calculator switches years at the astronomically computed instant of Lichun.
