Hexagram 39 · Jian (Obstruction)

Shui Shan Jian (Water over Mountain)

Trigrams

Upper: Kan / Lower: Gen

Element

Water

Nature

Hardship and Difficulty

Judgment

It is beneficial to go to the southwest, not beneficial to go to the northeast; it is beneficial to see the great person; correctness brings good fortune.

Image

There is water above the mountain: Jian; the noble person thus turns inward to cultivate virtue. — Water flows down from above the mountain and is obstructed, symbolizing hardship; the noble person should turn inward in self-reflection and cultivate virtue.

Interpretation

The Jian hexagram symbolizes hardship and difficulty in travel. In career matters, progress is blocked; one must seek answers within; in relationships, there may be twists and turns; in decision-making, the road is hard; it is fitting to go where it is easier, seek help from noble persons, and cultivate virtue while waiting for the right moment.
