How to Read Six Relations in Liuyao

Use Five Element relationships to locate parents, siblings, descendants, wealth, and officials.

Overview

The Six Relatives (Liu Qin) are an important concept in the Six Yao (Liu Yao) prediction system, used to describe interpersonal social relationships and categories of matters. They include the Parent Yao (Fumu Yao), Sibling Yao (Xiongdi Yao), Descendant Yao (Zisun Yao), Wealth Yao (Qicai Yao), and Official Ghost Yao (Guangui Yao)—five categories, plus the Self (Wo Shen), making six in total. The determination of the Six Relatives is based on the Wuxing relationship between the Earthly Branch of each Yao in the hexagram and the Wuxing of the world line (Shi Yao). This system originates from the image-number thinking of the Zhou Yi (I Ching), reducing the complex phenomena of human affairs into six basic relationship types. It enables the diviner to intuitively read information related to the matter being asked directly from the hexagram image.

Concept and Classification of the Six Relatives

The Six Relatives include Parents, Siblings, Descendants, Wealth, and Official Ghost, plus the world line representing the Self. The Parent Yao generates me, representing elders, documents, education, houses, vehicles, and other protective things. The Sibling Yao is the same as me, representing brothers and sisters, friends, colleagues, competitors, and other peer relationships. The Descendant Yao is generated by me, representing juniors, students, medicine, enjoyment, relief, and other things that I give to. The Wealth Yao is overcome by me, representing wives, money, materials, properties, and other things under my control. The Official Ghost Yao overcomes me, representing official positions, superiors, diseases, disasters, lawsuits, and other restrictive things. The Six Relatives classification covers the main social relationships and matter types one faces in life.

Method for Determining the Six Relatives

The determination of the Six Relatives uses the Wuxing attribute of the Yao where the world line resides as the baseline. The world line is the Self. The Six Relatives attribute of other Yao in the hexagram depends on the Wuxing generation-restriction relationship between their Earthly Branch and the world line's Wuxing. Those that generate me are Parents; those that are the same as me are Siblings; those that I generate are Descendants; those that I overcome are Wealth; those that overcome me are Official Ghost. For example, if the world line's Wuxing is Metal, then encountering Earth Yao in the hexagram indicates Parents; encountering Metal Yao indicates Siblings; encountering Water Yao indicates Descendants; encountering Wood Yao indicates Wealth; encountering Fire Yao indicates Official Ghost. The assignment of Six Relatives is dynamic: the same hexagram will have different Six Relatives attributes for each Yao depending on the world line's Wuxing.

Meanings and Symbols of Each Relative

The Parent Yao symbolizes protection, nourishment, and inheritance. It governs academic achievement, documents and contracts, elders and teachers, houses and vehicles, clothing and umbrellas, and all things that generate and assist me. The Sibling Yao symbolizes equality, competition, and wealth dispersion. It governs peers and relatives, partners, competitors, financial loss and consumption, and all things of the same kind as me. The Descendant Yao symbolizes continuation, creation, and worry relief. It governs children and juniors, students and disciples, medicine and doctors, entertainment and enjoyment, subduing Official Ghost, and all things that I generate and nurture. The Wealth Yao symbolizes possession, control, and resources. It governs wives and lovers, money and currency, grain and goods, properties and savings, and all things under my domination. The Official Ghost Yao symbolizes constraint, pressure, and authority. It governs official positions and merit, superiors and leaders, lawsuits and litigation, diseases and disasters, thieves and evil spirits, and all things that restrict the Self.

Application of Six Relatives in Wealth Prediction

In wealth prediction, the Wealth Yao is used as the target line (Yong Shen). Focus on observing the flourishing or declining state of the Wealth Yao and its relationship with the world line. If the Wealth Yao is flourishing and holds the world line or generates/harmonizes with the world line, it indicates smooth fortune and abundant wealth. If the Wealth Yao is weak and overcome, it indicates difficulty in seeking wealth. At the same time, pay attention to the movement of the Sibling Yao, as active Sibling Yao often indicates financial loss and consumption, because the Sibling Yao overcomes the Wealth Yao. Active Descendant Yao is favorable for seeking wealth, because the Descendant Yao generates the Wealth Yao. Active Parent Yao consumes wealth, because the Parent Yao overcomes the Descendant Yao, indirectly harming wealth fortune. Active Official Ghost Yao needs to be analyzed case by case: the Official Ghost Yao generates the Parent Yao and indirectly consumes wealth, but if the Official Ghost Yao moves and transforms into the Wealth Yao, it indicates gaining wealth through official channels.

Application of Six Relatives in Marriage Prediction

In marriage prediction, for a male asking, the Wealth Yao represents the wife; for a female asking, the Official Ghost Yao represents the husband. For a male asking about marriage, if the Wealth Yao is flourishing and generates/harmonizes with the world line, it indicates harmonious marriage. If the Wealth Yao is overcome or empty/terminated, it indicates marital difficulties. For a female asking about marriage, if the Official Ghost Yao is flourishing and generates/harmonizes with the world line, it indicates a virtuous husband and peaceful family. If the Official Ghost Yao appears multiple times or is overcome, it indicates emotional ups and downs. At the same time, observe the state of the response line (Ying Yao), which represents the other party's family or the spouse's overall condition. The Parent Yao governs marriage contracts and documents; a flourishing Parent Yao indicates a marriage with proper basis. Active Sibling Yao indicates competitors or verbal disputes. Active Descendant Yao in a male's inquiry is unfavorable for marriage, because the Descendant Yao overcomes the Official Ghost Yao.

Application of Six Relatives in Lawsuit and Health Prediction

In lawsuit prediction, the Official Ghost Yao is used as the target line, while also considering the Parent Yao representing documents and complaints. If the Official Ghost Yao holds the world line or generates the world line and is flourishing and inactive, it indicates a justified lawsuit or official assistance. If the Official Ghost Yao overcomes the world line or moves in an inauspicious direction, it indicates an unfavorable lawsuit or suppression by officials. Active Descendant Yao overcoming the Official Ghost Yao indicates the ability to resolve legal disputes or win the lawsuit. Active Sibling Yao generating the Descendant Yao indirectly helps resolve legal disputes. In health prediction, the Official Ghost Yao also represents illness. If the Official Ghost Yao is flourishing and overcomes the world line, it indicates lingering illness. If the Official Ghost Yao is weak or overcome, it indicates minor illness and quick recovery. The Descendant Yao represents medicine; if the Descendant Yao is flourishing and active in overcoming the Official Ghost Yao, it indicates recovery through good medical treatment. The Parent Yao represents diet and recuperation; the Parent Yao generating the world line is conducive to recovery.
