How Branch Interactions Trigger Change

Use clash, combination, punishment, harm, and meetings to read chart movement without forcing events.

Overview

Punishment, Clash, Meeting, and Combination (刑冲会合) are the general terms for the interactive relationships among the Earthly Branches (地支), including clashing (相冲), combining (相合), punishing (相刑), harming (相害), and meeting (相会) relationships. These relationships reveal the dynamic interaction patterns among the Earthly Branches (地支) and are an important basis in Bazi (八字) destiny analysis for judging auspiciousness and inauspiciousness, and changes of events. The relationships of punishment, clash, meeting, and combination among the Earthly Branches (地支) are intricate and complex, encompassing both mutually promoting harmonious relationships and mutually restraining conflicting relationships, together constituting the dynamic balance system within the destiny chart. Understanding these relationships is a key step in mastering Bazi (八字) destiny analysis in depth.

The Six Clashes (六冲)

The Six Clashes (六冲) refer to the oppositional and conflicting relationships between pairs of Earthly Branches (地支): Zi-Wu clash (子午冲), Chou-Wei clash (丑未冲), Yin-Shen clash (寅申冲), Mao-You clash (卯酉冲), Chen-Xu clash (辰戌冲), and Si-Hai clash (巳亥冲). Clash represents the forces of change, conflict, opposition, and transformation. When a clash appears in a destiny chart, it often signifies significant fluctuations, changes, or turning points in the related areas. The force of clash is direct and strong; sometimes it brings breakthroughs and opportunities, sometimes it triggers contradictions and losses. Comprehensive judgment must be combined with the favorable and unfavorable elements of the destiny chart.

The Six Combinations (六合)

The Six Combinations (六合) refer to the harmonious and congenial relationships between pairs of Earthly Branches (地支): Zi (子) and Chou (丑) combine into Earth (土), Yin (寅) and Hai (亥) combine into Wood (木), Mao (卯) and Xu (戌) combine into Fire (火), Chen (辰) and You (酉) combine into Metal (金), Si (巳) and Shen (申) combine into Water (水), and Wu (午) and Wei (未) combine into Earth (土). Combination represents the forces of union, attraction, fusion, and stability. When a combination appears in a destiny chart, it usually indicates close connections and interactions between related matters, harmonious interpersonal relationships, and the appearance of cooperation opportunities. The force of the Six Combinations (六合) is relatively gentle, indicating harmony and cooperation.

Triple Combinations (三合局)

Triple Combinations (三合局) refer to the powerful Five Element (五行) frames formed by the combination of three Earthly Branches (地支): Shen (申), Zi (子), and Chen (辰) combine to form the Water (水) frame; Hai (亥), Mao (卯), and Wei (未) combine to form the Wood (木) frame; Yin (寅), Wu (午), and Xu (戌) combine to form the Fire (火) frame; and Si (巳), You (酉), and Chou (丑) combine to form the Metal (金) frame. Triple Combinations (三合局) are powerful and stable; when all three Branches are present in a destiny chart, they significantly enhance the corresponding Five Element (五行). In destiny analysis, Triple Combinations (三合局) indicate powerful assistance and opportunities, but one must also be mindful of whether they become excessive and unfavorable.

Triple Meetings (三会方)

Triple Meetings (三会方) refer to the gathering of the qi of one direction by three Earthly Branches (地支): Yin (寅), Mao (卯), and Chen (辰) meet to form the East Wood (东方木); Si (巳), Wu (午), and Wei (未) meet to form the South Fire (南方火); Shen (申), You (酉), and Xu (戌) meet to form the West Metal (西方金); and Hai (亥), Zi (子), and Chou (丑) meet to form the North Water (北方水). Triple Meetings (三会方) represent the convergence of directional qi, concentrated and pure. The difference between Triple Meetings (三会方) and Triple Combinations (三合局) is that Triple Meetings (三会方) emphasize the gathering of directional qi, while Triple Combinations (三合局) emphasize the generation of Five Element (五行) forces.

Punishment (刑)

Triple Punishments (三刑) Triple Punishments (三刑) refer to the punitive relationships formed among three Earthly Branches (地支): the Yin-Si-Shen Triple Punishment (寅巳申三刑, punishment of ingratitude), indicating ungratefulness and betrayal of kindness; the Chou-Xu-Wei Triple Punishment (丑戌未三刑, punishment of bullying by power), indicating oppression of the weak by the strong; and the Zi-Mao Punishment (子卯刑, punishment of impropriety), indicating insubordination and impropriety. Triple Punishments (三刑) represent contradiction, harm, and dispute; when they appear in a destiny chart, they often imply tense interpersonal relationships or encounters with petty people.

Self-Punishment (自刑) Self-Punishment (自刑) refers to an Earthly Branch (地支) punishing itself: Chen-Chen self-punishment (辰辰自刑), Wu-Wu self-punishment (午午自刑), You-You self-punishment (酉酉自刑), and Hai-Hai self-punishment (亥亥自刑). Self-Punishment (自刑) indicates inner conflict, self-entanglement, and self-inflicted worry, and may also manifest as excessively high self-expectations or self-harming tendencies.

Harm (害)

The Six Harms (六害) refer to the mutually undermining relationships among the Earthly Branches (地支): Zi-Wei harm (子未害), Chou-Wu harm (丑午害), Yin-Si harm (寅巳害), Mao-Chen harm (卯辰害), Shen-Hai harm (申亥害), and You-Xu harm (酉戌害). Harm represents covert destruction, the schemes of petty people, and discord. The force of harm is not as direct and obvious as clash, but is more insidious and concealed, often creating trouble and obstacles in secret.

Points for Application

When analyzing punishment, clash, meeting, and combination, one should comprehensively consider the overall structure and the waxing and waning of the Five Elements (五行) in the destiny chart. Punishment and clash are not necessarily entirely inauspicious, nor are combination and meeting necessarily entirely auspicious; the key lies in whether they meet the needs of the favorable and unfavorable elements in the destiny chart. For example, an unfavorable god (忌神) being clashed is actually auspicious, while a favorable god (喜神) being combined away may be inauspicious. Comprehensive judgment must be combined with the waxing and waning of the Five Elements (五行), the configuration of the Ten Gods (十神), the Great Luck (大运) and Annual Luck (流年), and other factors, avoiding mechanical application.
