How to Read Bazi Patterns: Find the Main Line First

Learn regular and variant pattern conditions without treating the pattern name as a life label.

The Concept of Destiny Patterns (格局)

Destiny patterns (格局) are a system of classification and analysis in Bazi (八字) based on the distribution and combination characteristics of the Five Element (五行) forces within the destiny chart. The pattern-based method of destiny analysis was gradually developed and refined by destiny scholars during the Tang and Song dynasties. Its core idea is to identify the dominant Ten God (十神) force within the destiny chart to judge the native's life themes, developmental direction, and main characteristics. Pattern analysis helps quickly grasp the core structure and main contradictions of a destiny chart, serving as an important analytical framework and entry point for destiny interpretation in Bazi (八字).

Regular Patterns (正格)

Regular patterns (正格) refer to destiny charts where the Five Element (五行) forces are relatively balanced, the Day Master has roots and vitality, and is capable of bearing wealth and office. Traditional destiny studies mainly recognize eight regular patterns (正格):

Zheng Guan Pattern (正官格) In this pattern, the Zheng Guan (正官) force is prominent and serves as the Useful God (用神), indicating propriety, stable career, and strong responsibility. People with the Zheng Guan Pattern (正官格) are usually suited for public service, management, or rule-abiding work.

Qi Sha Pattern (七杀格) In this pattern, the Qi Sha (七杀) force is significant, indicating strong enterprise, willingness to challenge, and boldness. If the Qi Sha (七杀) can be properly controlled and transformed, people with this pattern often stand out in competition and achieve career success.

Zheng Yin Pattern (正印格) With flourishing Seal (印星) as the Useful God (用神), this pattern indicates abundant knowledge, protection by elders, and deep thought. People with the Zheng Yin Pattern (正印格) usually have good learning ability and cultural literacy.

Pian Yin Pattern (偏印格) In this pattern, the Pian Yin (偏印) force is prominent, indicating unique thinking, special talents, and scholarly dedication. People with the Pian Yin Pattern (偏印格) often have unique insights and accomplishments in specialized fields.

Zheng Cai Pattern (正财格) With Zheng Cai (正财) as the dominant force in the destiny chart, this pattern indicates steady financial management, valuing material life, and practical work. People with the Zheng Cai Pattern (正财格) are usually suited for finance, commerce, and other work requiring careful calculation.

Pian Cai Pattern (偏财格) In this pattern, the Pian Cai (偏财) force is significant, indicating skill at seizing opportunities, flexible wealth luck, and wide social connections. People with the Pian Cai Pattern (偏财格) usually have business acumen and investment vision.

Shi Shen Pattern (食神格) With flourishing Shi Shen (食神) as the Useful God (用神), this pattern indicates abundant talent, comfortable life, and broad-mindedness. People with the Shi Shen Pattern (食神格) usually have good aesthetic taste and creativity.

Shang Guan Pattern (伤官格) In this pattern, the Shang Guan (伤官) force is prominent, indicating intelligence, strong expressive ability, and unconventional thinking. If people with the Shang Guan Pattern (伤官格) can make good use of their talents, they often achieve success in art, technology, and other fields.

Variant Patterns (变格)

When the Five Element (五行) forces in a destiny chart are extremely unbalanced—either excessively strong or weak—and the Day Master cannot bear wealth and office in the conventional manner, variant patterns (变格) may form:

Following Patterns (从格) The Day Master is extremely weak and completely follows the most flourishing Five Element (五行) force in the destiny chart. This includes the Strong Following Pattern (从强格, following the momentum of Bi Jie and Yin Xing) and the Weak Following Pattern (从弱格, following the momentum of Cai, Guan, and Shi Shang). The fortunes of people with Following Patterns (从格) differ greatly from those with conventional patterns.

Transformation Patterns (化格) A combination and transformation occurs among the Heavenly Stems (天干), and the transformation succeeds, fundamentally changing the nature of the destiny chart. Transformation Patterns (化格) are relatively rare and require strict conditions for establishment.

Steps for Determining Destiny Patterns (格局判定步骤)

First, analyze the strength state of the Day Master to determine whether it is capable of bearing wealth and office. Second, identify the most prominent Ten God (十神) force in the destiny chart. Third, judge whether that Ten God forms a pattern (requires support from the month command and other conditions). Finally, combine with the Great Luck (大运) and Annual Luck (流年) to verify the establishment and changes of the pattern. Whether a pattern is established requires comprehensive judgment based on multiple factors; it cannot be determined by a single condition alone.

Points for Attention

Pattern analysis is only one of the entry points for destiny analysis and should not be used in isolation. In actual destiny interpretation, it is also necessary to combine with the waxing and waning of the Five Elements (五行), the configuration of divine spirits (神煞), the Great Luck (大运) and Annual Luck (流年), and other factors for comprehensive judgment. Furthermore, there are high and low distinctions within the same pattern; the same pattern will manifest differently in different destiny charts, requiring flexible analysis according to specific circumstances.
