Hexagram 48 · Jing (The Well)

Shui Feng Jing (Water over Wind)

Trigrams

Upper: Kan / Lower: Xun

Element

Water

Nature

Nourishment of the Well

Judgment

The town may be changed, but the well cannot be changed; nothing is lost, nothing gained. Those who come and go draw from the well. If the rope does not reach the water, or if the jar is broken, there is misfortune.

Image

Wood draws water: Jing; the noble person thus labors to encourage mutual help among the people. — There is water in the wooden vessel, symbolizing the well; the noble person should comfort the people and encourage them to help one another.

Interpretation

The Jing hexagram symbolizes the well, which nourishes people without end. In career matters, the foundation is stable and can provide value continuously; in relationships, like the deep waters of a well, care and maintenance are needed; in decision-making, hold to one's position and serve others, but do not fall short of completion.
