How to Read Da Yun: Ten-Year Phases Are Not Commands

Understand start age, transition periods, annual triggers, and phase themes without fixed verdicts.

The Concept of Great Luck (大运)

Great Luck (大运) is an important methodological system in Bazi (八字) destiny analysis for calculating the changes in fortune across different stages of life. A person's life is divided into periods of ten years each, called Great Luck (大运). Each Great Luck (大运) is composed of one Heavenly Stem (天干) and one Earthly Branch (地支), together governing the trend of fortune over that ten-year period. Great Luck (大运), combined with the Four Pillars (四柱八字, the year, month, day, and hour pillars), enables systematic analysis of the opportunities and challenges, as well as the ups and downs, of different life stages. Great Luck (大运) theory embodies the ancient Chinese destiny studies idea that \"destiny is determined by heaven, but fortune is shaped by oneself,\" holding that the innate destiny chart determines the basic framework of life, while the acquired Great Luck (大运) determines the specific fortunes of different periods.

Calculating the Starting Age of Luck (起运年龄计算)

The starting age of luck is calculated based on the time difference between the birth time and the nearest seasonal node (二十四节气). The specific rules are: for males born in a Yang year (years with Jia 甲, Bing 丙, Wu 戊, Geng 庚, or Ren 壬) and females born in a Yin year (years with Yi 乙, Ding 丁, Ji 己, Xin 辛, or Gui 癸), the Great Luck (大运) is arranged in forward order; for males born in a Yin year and females born in a Yang year, the Great Luck (大运) is arranged in reverse order. The number of days from the birth day to the nearest seasonal node is divided by three (three days equal one year), and the result is the starting age of luck. For example, if the interval from the birth day to the Beginning of Spring is thirty days, the starting age of luck is ten; if the interval is three days, the starting age of luck is one.

Arranging the Great Luck (大运排法)

The arrangement of Great Luck (大运) is based on the month pillar, with forward arrangement proceeding in the order of the sixty Jiazi (六十甲子), and reverse arrangement proceeding in reverse order. Each Great Luck (大运) governs a ten-year period, advancing in sequence to cover the native's entire life. The Stems and Branches of the Great Luck (大运) reflect the changing trends of the Five Element (五行) forces within the destiny chart during that ten-year period, exerting an important influence on the native's fortune. When arranging Great Luck (大运), attention must be paid to the accurate handover time of the seasonal nodes, as they are the important basis for dividing months and arranging Great Luck (大运).

Ten Years per Luck (十年一运)

Each Great Luck (大运) governs a ten-year period, during which the force of its Stems and Branches continuously affects the balance of the Five Elements (五行) within the destiny chart. If the Five Element (五行) of the Great Luck (大运) is favorable to the destiny chart (the Useful God 用神), that ten-year period will be relatively smooth, with good fortune in career, health, and interpersonal relationships. If the Five Element (五行) of the Great Luck (大运) is unfavorable to the destiny chart (the Unfavorable God 忌神), that ten-year period may face more challenges and difficulties. The auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of Great Luck (大运) is not absolute; it must be combined with the Annual Luck (流年, the Stems and Branches of each year) for specific analysis of each year's fortune.

Relationship Between Great Luck and Annual Luck (大运与流年关系)

Great Luck (大运) governs the general trend of ten years, while Annual Luck (流年) governs the specific changes of the current year. Interactive relationships of generation, control, clash, and combination occur between the Annual Luck (流年) and the Great Luck (大运), and this interaction determines the specific performance of that year's fortune. In destiny analysis, there is a saying that \"Great Luck is the substance, Annual Luck is the function,\" meaning that Great Luck (大运) determines the basic trend, while Annual Luck (流年) determines the specific changes. When the Annual Luck (流年) and Great Luck (大运) mutually generate or combine, that year tends to be smooth; when they clash or control each other, that year tends to be turbulent. The combined analysis of Great Luck (大运) and Annual Luck (流年) is the core method for predicting annual fortune.

Characteristics of the Luck Transition Period (换运期特征)

The period of transition from one Great Luck (大运) to the next is called the luck transition period (换运期), usually referring to about one year before and after the transition, totaling approximately two years. During the luck transition period, important life changes often occur, such as job changes, relocation, health changes, and adjustments in interpersonal relationships. The luck transition period is a critical node of fortune transformation; the forces of the Five Elements (五行) within the destiny chart undergo fundamental changes during this stage, so one often feels a noticeable turning point in fortune. Understanding the characteristics of the luck transition period helps in preparing mentally and planning responses in advance.

Great Luck (大运) analysis is an important component of Bazi (八字) destiny prediction. Through systematic analysis of the interactive relationships between Great Luck (大运) and the destiny chart, one can grasp the developmental themes and coping strategies of different life stages, providing valuable reference for life planning.
