How to Read Earthly Branches: Direction, Season, and Hidden Stems
Read branches as timing, place, hidden stems, and relationship layers, not just zodiac labels.
Overview
The Earthly Branches (地支) are twelve symbols used in ancient China for recording time and position: Zi (子), Chou (丑), Yin (寅), Mao (卯), Chen (辰), Si (巳), Wu (午), Wei (未), Shen (申), You (酉), Xu (戌), and Hai (亥). The Earthly Branches (地支) combine with the Heavenly Stems (天干) to form the sixty Jiazi (六十甲子) cycle, widely applied in traditional calendar systems, destiny studies, astronomical observation, and the Midnight-Noon Ebb-Flow (子午流注) method of traditional Chinese medicine (中医). The formation of the twelve Earthly Branches (地支) is closely related to the ancients' long-term observation of celestial movements and phenological changes; each Branch carries rich natural symbolic meaning and cultural connotation.
Earthly Branches and Time Periods (地支与时辰)
The twelve Earthly Branches (地支) correspond to the twelve time periods of a day, each period being two hours in modern time:
Zi (子) hour (23:00–01:00), Chou (丑) hour (01:00–03:00), Yin (寅) hour (03:00–05:00), Mao (卯) hour (05:00–07:00), Chen (辰) hour (07:00–09:00), Si (巳) hour (09:00–11:00), Wu (午) hour (11:00–13:00), Wei (未) hour (13:00–15:00), Shen (申) hour (15:00–17:00), You (酉) hour (17:00–19:00), Xu (戌) hour (19:00–21:00), and Hai (亥) hour (21:00–23:00).
The Earthly Branch (地支) time-keeping method is an important traditional timing system still widely used in traditional calendars and destiny studies. Each time period corresponds to different natural phenomena and the flow of qi and blood through the body's meridians.
Earthly Branches and Directions (地支与方位)
The twelve Earthly Branches (地支) are distributed in a circle to form an important foundation of the ancient Chinese directional system:
Zi (子) is due north, Wu (午) is due south, Mao (卯) is due east, and You (酉) is due west. The remaining Branches are distributed in the four corners: Chou (丑) and Yin (寅) are northeast, Chen (辰) and Si (巳) are southeast, Wei (未) and Shen (申) are southwest, and Xu (戌) and Hai (亥) are northwest. The Earthly Branch (地支) directional system has important applications in feng shui (风水), military formations, and architectural planning, and is also a basic tool for analyzing directional auspiciousness in destiny studies.
Earthly Branches and the Five Elements (地支与五行)
Each of the twelve Earthly Branches (地支) has its own Five Element (五行) attribute: Yin (寅) and Mao (卯) belong to Wood (木), Si (巳) and Wu (午) belong to Fire (火), Shen (申) and You (酉) belong to Metal (金), Hai (亥) and Zi (子) belong to Water (水), and Chen (辰), Xu (戌), Chou (丑), and Wei (未) belong to Earth (土). The Earth Branches are distributed at the end of each season, serving as a transitional bridge, symbolizing the transformative stages of growth, maturation, harvest, and storage of all things. The Five Element attribute of each Earthly Branch (地支) is an important basis for judging the strength and generating-controlling relationships of the Five Elements (五行) in destiny analysis.
Hidden Stems (地支藏干)
Each Earthly Branch (地支) internally hides one to three Heavenly Stems (天干), known as Hidden Stems (藏干) or Human Elements (人元), revealing the complex internal structure and energy layers of the Branch. For example: Yin (寅) hides Jia Wood (甲木), Bing Fire (丙火), and Wu Earth (戊土), with Jia Wood (甲木) as the principal qi; Zi (子) hides only Gui Water (癸水); Chou (丑) hides Ji Earth (己土), Gui Water (癸水), and Xin Metal (辛金). The Hidden Stems theory makes the analysis of Earthly Branches (地支) more refined. In destiny studies, Hidden Stems are often used to analyze the hidden power of the Ten Gods (十神) and the deep structure of the Five Elements (五行) within the destiny chart.
Triple Combination (三合) and Six Combinations (六合)
Triple Combinations (三合局)
When three Earthly Branches (地支) combine, they form a powerful concentration of Five Element (五行) force, called a Triple Combination (三合局):
Shen (申), Zi (子), and Chen (辰) combine to form the Water (水) frame; Hai (亥), Mao (卯), and Wei (未) combine to form the Wood (木) frame; Yin (寅), Wu (午), and Xu (戌) combine to form the Fire (火) frame; Si (巳), You (酉), and Chou (丑) combine to form the Metal (金) frame.
A Triple Combination (三合局) requires all three Branches to appear simultaneously to be fully established; its power is strong and stable. When a Triple Combination (三合局) appears in a destiny chart, it significantly enhances the corresponding Five Element (五行), exerting an important influence on the native's personality and fortune. For example, if a destiny chart contains the Shen-Zi-Chen Triple Water Combination (申子辰三合水局), the power of Water (水) will be greatly strengthened.
Six Combinations (六合)
Pairs of Earthly Branches (地支) combine harmoniously with each other:
Zi (子) and Chou (丑) combine into Earth (土), Yin (寅) and Hai (亥) combine into Wood (木), Mao (卯) and Xu (戌) combine into Fire (火), Chen (辰) and You (酉) combine into Metal (金), Si (巳) and Shen (申) combine into Water (水), and Wu (午) and Wei (未) combine into Earth (土).
The Six Combinations (六合) represent harmony and fusion, usually indicating close connections and interactions between related matters, harmonious interpersonal relationships, and the appearance of cooperation opportunities. The power of the Six Combinations (六合) is gentler than that of the Triple Combinations (三合局), but more flexible and direct.
The Earthly Branches (地支) system is an important tool for understanding temporal cycles and spatial directions, and is an indispensable foundational element in Bazi (八字) destiny analysis. Mastering the various relationships of the Earthly Branches (地支) is a key step in learning Bazi (八字) destiny analysis.
