How to Place Shi and Ying in Liuyao

Locate the querent, the other side, and the situation before judging movement or outcome.

Overview

Shi Ying (World-Response) is a pair of core concepts and the key coordinate for positioning the relationship between the querent and the object of inquiry in Six Yao (Liu Yao) prediction. The world line (Shi Yao) represents the querent themselves or our side; the response line (Ying Yao) represents the other party, the external side, or the matter being asked about. The establishment of Shi and Ying gives the hexagram a distinction between subject and object, providing a benchmark for judging the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of the relationship between both parties. The positions of Shi and Ying are not arbitrarily determined but follow fixed rules of the eight-palace hexagram arrangement. In each of the eight hexagrams of a palace, the world line occupies a different position, forming a systematic prediction framework.

Concepts of Shi Yao and Ying Yao

The Shi Yao is the core of the hexagram, representing the person casting the divination, the subject of the inquiry, and the symbol of our side. In a Six Yao hexagram, the Shi Yao is the position of the Self. All judgments mostly start from the Shi Yao, observing the generation-restriction relationship between other Yao and the Shi Yao to infer auspiciousness or inauspiciousness. The Ying Yao is opposite to the Shi Yao, separated by two positions, representing the object of the inquiry, the other party, or the environment. For example, in marriage inquiries, the Ying Yao is the spouse; in partnership inquiries, the Ying Yao is the partner; in competition inquiries, the Ying Yao is the opponent. The relationship between Shi and Ying is an important basis for judging the success or failure of a matter. If Shi and Ying generate or harmonize with each other, the matter tends to succeed; if they overcome or clash with each other, the matter tends to be obstructed.

Method for Determining Shi and Ying

The determination of Shi and Ying is based on the eight-palace hexagram arrangement method. For pure hexagrams (Chungua), the Shi Yao is at the top Yao, and the Ying Yao is at the third Yao. For first-generation hexagrams, the Shi Yao is at the first Yao; for second-generation hexagrams, at the second Yao; for third-generation hexagrams, at the third Yao; for fourth-generation hexagrams, at the fourth Yao; for fifth-generation hexagrams, at the fifth Yao. For wandering soul hexagrams (Youhungua), the Shi Yao is at the fourth Yao; for returning soul hexagrams (Guihungua), the Shi Yao is at the third Yao. The position of the Ying Yao is fixed at two positions away from the Shi Yao: if Shi is at the first, Ying is at the third; if Shi is at the second, Ying is at the fourth; if Shi is at the third, Ying is at the fifth; if Shi is at the fourth, Ying is at the top; if Shi is at the fifth, Ying is at the second; if Shi is at the top, Ying is at the third. By determining the palace to which the hexagram belongs and the position of the Shi Yao, the Shi and Ying Yao can be accurately identified. This arrangement pattern reflects the complete process of a thing from birth to development, from change to return and storage.

Shi Yao Represents the Querent

The Shi Yao is the Yao in the hexagram that represents the querent themselves and is the benchmark point for analysis and judgment. The flourishing or declining state of the Shi Yao directly reflects the querent's current condition. A flourishing Shi Yao indicates a strong Self, prosperous energy, and good fortune. A weak Shi Yao indicates a weak Self and low fortune. The Six Relatives (Liu Qin) that the Shi Yao corresponds to also has significant meaning: Shi corresponding to Official Ghost indicates holding an official position or being under pressure; Shi corresponding to Wealth indicates affinity with wealth; Shi corresponding to Parent indicates receiving help from elders; Shi corresponding to Sibling indicates peer-related matters; Shi corresponding to Descendant indicates worry-free conditions or matters related to juniors. The relationship between the target line (Yong Shen) and the Shi Yao is the core for judging auspiciousness or inauspiciousness: if the Yong Shen generates or harmonizes with the Shi Yao, it is auspicious; if it overcomes or harms the Shi Yao, it is inauspicious. If the Shi Yao is empty or terminated, it indicates an unsteady mind or insufficient personal ability.

Ying Yao Represents the Other Party and Matters

The Ying Yao is the Yao in the hexagram that represents the other party, the object, or the matter being asked about, forming a corresponding relationship with the Shi Yao. The state of the Ying Yao reflects the condition of the other party or the environment. A flourishing Ying Yao indicates a strong other party or favorable environment; a weak Ying Yao indicates a weak other party or unfavorable environment. In specific predictions, the symbol of the Ying Yao varies by matter: in marriage inquiries, it represents the spouse; in wealth inquiries, it represents the source of wealth or the client; in lawsuit inquiries, it represents the opposing party; in travel inquiries, it represents the destination; in lost item inquiries, it represents the location of the lost item. The Six Relatives that the Ying Yao corresponds to also has specific meanings: Ying corresponding to Official Ghost indicates the other party has authority or is an unfavorable spirit; Ying corresponding to Wealth indicates the other party is related to wealth; Ying corresponding to Parent indicates the other party is older or has document-related matters.

Judging the Shi-Ying Relationship

The relationship between Shi and Ying is the core link in Six Yao divination. If Shi and Ying generate or harmonize with each other, it indicates mutual affection and smooth progress. If they overcome or clash with each other, it indicates opposition and obstruction. Shi generating Ying means I take the initiative to give; Ying generating Shi means the other party comes to me. Shi overcoming Ying means I control the other party; Ying overcoming Shi means the other party suppresses me. Shi and Yao being of the same type indicates equality and shared aspirations. At the same time, the Six Relatives relationship must be combined for analysis. For example, in marriage inquiries where Shi represents the male and Ying corresponds to Wealth, Shi-Ying harmony indicates the marriage can succeed. In career inquiries, Shi-Ying mutual generation indicates receiving support from noble people. However, the Shi-Ying relationship is not the sole criterion; it must be combined with the flourishing or declining state of the target line, the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of movement and transformation, the day branch and month branch, and other factors for comprehensive judgment.

Application of Shi-Ying in Practical Divination

In practical divination, the application of Shi and Ying is extremely broad. For seeking something, if Shi and Ying generate or harmonize and the target line is flourishing, the matter can succeed; if Shi and Ying clash or overcome and the target line is weak, the matter is difficult to achieve. For partnership inquiries, if Shi and Ying generate or harmonize and the Wealth Yao is flourishing, it indicates pleasant cooperation and substantial profit; if Shi and Ying clash or overcome, it indicates partnership breakdown. For relationship inquiries, if a male asks and Shi corresponds to Wealth or Ying corresponds to Wealth and generates Shi, it indicates the other party has affection. If a female asks and Shi corresponds to Official Ghost or Ying corresponds to Official Ghost and generates Shi, it indicates the marriage can succeed. For competition inquiries, if Shi overcomes Ying or Shi is flourishing and Ying is weak, our side wins; if Ying overcomes Shi or Ying is flourishing and Shi is weak, the opponent wins. The analysis of Shi and Ying must be applied flexibly without rigidity, and must be combined with the specific matter and the full hexagram information for comprehensive inference.
