How to Handle Zi Hour Around 23:00

Compare the two day-boundary practices and keep the charting rule consistent before interpretation.

Origins of the Controversy

The Zi (子) hour is the first of the twelve time periods, corresponding to modern time from 23:00 to 01:00 the next day. Because the Zi (子) hour spans two days, there has been a long-standing controversy in the destiny studies community regarding the boundary of the Zi (子) hour: for a child born after 23:00, does the day pillar count as the current day or the next day? This controversy directly affects the accuracy of Bazi (八字) chart arrangement and is an unavoidable foundational issue in destiny practice.

Early Zi (早子时) and Late Zi (晚子时)

Early Zi (早子时) refers to the period between 23:00 and 00:00, when the time has entered the Zi (子) hour but the date has not yet changed. Late Zi (晚子时) refers to the period between 00:00 and 01:00, when the date has already entered the next day. The core of the controversy is: should the day pillar change after 23:00? In traditional destiny systems, the day pillar is recorded using Heavenly Stems (天干) and Earthly Branches (地支), and the transition point of the Stem-Branch day is not midnight zero, but another standard.

Views of the Two Schools

One school holds that midnight should be the boundary: between 23:00 and 00:00 still counts as the current day's day pillar, and after 00:00 it counts as the next day's day pillar, while the hour pillar is always the Zi (子) hour in both cases. This view is consistent with the modern calendar and is convenient to operate. The other school holds that the Zi (子) hour is not divided into early and late; once the Zi (子) hour is entered (after 23:00), it counts as the next day's day pillar. The reasoning is that as the starting point of a day, the Zi (子) hour should belong to the new day as a whole. This school follows the logic of traditional calendar systems where the year changes at the Beginning of Spring (立春) and the month changes at the seasonal node, believing that the transition of Stems and Branches has its fixed astronomical nodes.

Practical Recommendations

For destiny interpreters, special caution should be exercised when encountering charts born in the Zi (子) hour. The recommended approach is: first arrange the chart using both schemes, then compare which one better matches the native's actual life experiences and personality traits. If the birth time provided by the native is not precise enough, one should ask whether it was close to midnight. For scholars studying traditional calendars, reference can be made to the regulations on day boundaries in ancient texts such as the \"Xieji Bianfang Shu\" (《协纪辨方书》). At present, there is no unified conclusion in the academic community; maintaining an open attitude and combining with practical verification is the most pragmatic approach.

Software Handling Methods

Modern chart arrangement software usually provides two options: one uses midnight as the boundary (early Zi uses the current day's day pillar, late Zi uses the next day's day pillar), and the other uses 23:00 as the boundary (entering the Zi hour means changing the day pillar). When using software to arrange charts, one should understand its default rules and manually switch settings when necessary. It is recommended that destiny practitioners clearly inform clients of their chart arrangement standards to ensure consistency.
