Formation, divergence, and master-student lineages of major metaphysical schools
c. 1644 CE – 1840 CE
The Qing dynasty was a period of differentiation and deep transmission of metaphysical schools. Under the literary inquisition and high-pressure cultural policies, many scholars devoted their energy to evidential research and numerological studies, and metaphysics thus unexpectedly gained an environment for academic development. The most distinctive feature of Qing-dynasty metaphysics was the proliferation of schools: the pattern school represented by Ziping Zhenquan emphasized the purity of month-branch patterns and the distinction between successful and failed patterns; the strength school represented by Di Tian Sui focused on the prosperity or decline of the day stem and the selection of the useful god; and there were also the climate-harmonizing school, the spirit-noble school, the image school, and other branches. The various schools debated methodologies with one another and transmitted knowledge through master-disciple lineages, forming rich technical traditions and genealogies.
Shen Xiaozhan — a Qing-dynasty jinshi of the Qianlong era, author of Ziping Zhenquan, systematically expounding the pattern-based fortune-telling method, and recognized as the master of the pattern school; Ren Tieqiao — a mid-Qing metaphysician who devoted thirty years to annotating Di Tian Sui, taking the strength of the day stem and the harmonization of the useful god as core principles, opening a new phase for the strength school; Yu Chuntai — compiler of Qiong Tong Baojian, who pioneered the 'climate-harmonizing' fortune-telling method, using the harmonization of the Five Elements' climate as the core of judgment
Ziping Zhenquan — by Shen Xiaozhan, exclusively discussing pattern selection, with clear logic and well-organized structure, the pinnacle of the pattern school; Di Tian Sui — traditionally attributed to Song-dynasty Jing Tu, with Ming-dynasty Liu Ji commentary and Qing-dynasty Ren Tieqiao subcommentary, focusing on the temperament and momentum of stems and branches, emphasizing the overall atmosphere and the strength of the day stem; Qiong Tong Baojian — compiled by Yu Chuntai, based on month-branch climate, discussing the appropriateness and climate-harmonizing useful gods of the Five Elements across the twelve months
The formation of schools is a mark of academic maturity. Although the various Qing-dynasty metaphysical schools differed in methodology, they collectively propelled Bazi metaphysics from 'art' toward 'scholarship.' The rigor of the pattern school, the flexibility of the strength school, and the practicality of the climate-harmonizing school provided later metaphysicians with diversified analytical tools, enabling Bazi metaphysics to address more complex destiny questions.
