Yin-Yang & Five Elements

The philosophical foundation of Yin-Yang duality and Five Elements interaction cycles

c. 1000 BCE – 200 BCE

The Yin-Yang and Five Elements theory germinated during the Shang-Zhou transition and formed a systematic theory during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. The concept of yin-yang originated from natural observation of sunlight and shadow, later abstracted into two fundamental opposing yet unified forces in the universe. The Five Elements (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth) were initially five basic substances; in the Shangshu · Hongfan they were first endowed with philosophical meaning, and Zou Yan developed them into a cosmological model explaining historical change and the generation of all things. By the late Warring States period, the mutual generation and overcoming relationships of the Five Elements were largely complete, becoming a universal theoretical framework connecting astronomy, medicine, music, politics, and metaphysics.

Key Figures

Zou Yan — representative figure of the Warring States Yin-Yang school, proposed the 'Theory of Five Virtues in Cycle,' systematizing the Five Elements into a grand narrative explaining dynastic change; Laozi and Zhuangzi — Daoist pioneers who deepened the philosophical contemplation of opposition, transformation, and dynamic balance within yin-yang philosophy

Important Works

Shangshu · Hongfan — the earliest classic to systematically record the Five Elements, correlating them with five flavors, five colors, and five tones; Guanzi · Sishi and Lüshi Chunqiu · Shierji — matched yin-yang and five elements with the four seasons and twelve months, laying the theoretical prototype for later stem-branch five-element correspondences

Historical Significance

Yin-Yang and Five Elements constitute the core philosophical foundation of metaphysics. The generation-overcoming relationships, pattern preferences, and Ten God relationships in Bazi divination all employ the Five Elements as computational logic. It endowed Chinese metaphysics with a complete explanatory model, enabling a unified language to describe the interaction between personal destiny and cosmic rhythms.
